Legal tender silver coins were struck by the United States Mint until 1964 when the price of silver became higher than the face value of the coins. At one time or another the mint has issued silver, dollars, silver half dollars, silver quarters, silver dimes, silver nickels and silver cents. Due to the fluctuating price of silver, millions of U.S. Mint issued silver coins have been melted down over the years for the precious metal content. These wide spread melting's and natural wastage over time means there are very few premium quality silver coins available to collectors today.
