1861 $100 STATE OF FLORIDA, OBSOLETE CURRENCY

These Civil War issues were authorized after passage in the Florida legislature on February 14, 1861 just two weeks after Florida joined the Confederacy and about thirty days after the state seceded from the Union on January 11, 1861. The actual circulation for these notes did not begin until late September and October of 1861.

Hoyer and Ludwig of Richmond, VA were the printers selected to produce this issue which initially called for $500,000 face value in various denominations. The $100 design features a vignette of Ceres seated facing right at center and is dated October 10, 1861. John Milton Governor of Florida and C.H AustIn Treasurer of Florida.
