When the U.S. Mint introduced the Silver Eagle in 1986, it was a sensation.  The first silver bullion coin, it was struck with one full ounce of pure silver and was the largest silver coin in U.S. history.

It was also made in quantities that, in retrospect, were minuscule.  Today’s Silver Eagles are made in editions of up to 40 million … but only 5,393,005 coins were produced in 1986. Yet, you can still own these First year of issue coins certified perfect MS70 and PR70 DCAM. These seldom-seen “first” coins belong in every collection … but they’ve been unavailable from the U.S. Mint for over two decades.

Authorized by President Ronald Reagan, the purpose of the American Silver Eagle program was to provide individuals the opportunity to own physical silver that was guaranteed for weight and purity by the United States government. However, their beautiful design and large size made them an instant hit with coin collectors worldwide. This is your opportunity to acquire the first coins in the series that began the craze, certified in the highest numismatic grade possible, MS70 and PR70 DCAM.  These coins look incredible even under 5X magnification. In 1986 the certification of coins in “slabs” was in its infancy, for that reason only a tiny number of Silver Eagles produced between 1986- 1999 have ever been certified in perfect MS70 and PR70 condition. Consequently the certified “world population” for these coins is miniscule!

Please note the PR70 DCAM coin has a S for San Francisco Mintmark. Only Proof coins struck between 1986-1992 have an S mintmark. Almost two decades passed before the U.S. Mint struck another Silver Eagle bearing the S Mintmark in 2011!
