2011 –S Burnished Silver Eagle MS70 – John Mercanti Signature – The only San Francisco Mint Burnished Silver Eagle

The U.S. Mint first issued burnished American Silver Eagles in 2006 as part of a 3-coin 20th-anniversary collection. The coin in that set carried the W for WestPoint mintmark. Burnished Silver Eagles have been issued annually since then except 2009 and 2010 when the silver boom was near a peak, and the U.S. Mint was having difficulties securing coin blanks minted to their rigorous standards.

Collectors acquire Silver Eagles by their date, condition, rarity, mintmark, and strike. The burnished series is one of the most popular ways to collect them. An advanced set of burnished coins would require the inclusion of the 2008/2007 reverse die variety of which approximately 50,000 coins exist and this 2011 coin which is the only coin struck at the San Francisco Mint and has the third lowest mintage in the series at 99,882 coins. This rare S mint coin was only available by purchasing the 2011 5-pc 25th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle set.

The desirability and collectability of this coin are further enhanced because it has been hand signed by John M. Mercanti, the 12th Chief Engraver of the US Mint, and the designer of the reverse of the American Silver Eagle.

Mercanti was incredibly prolific during his 36-year tenure at the US Mint, which lasted from 1974 until his retirement in 2010. He designed well over 100 coins and medals—more than any other employee in the history of the US Mint.
