FIRST EVER BURNISHED GOLD EAGLE - SPECIAL STRIKE
The 2006 $50 Burnished American Gold Eagle coin was issued for the 20th anniversary of the series. They were slated to be a one-off special strike coin, but became so popular with collectors they have since become an annual series.
Unusually, out of 45,000 coins minted, only 3,822 coins have been certified in perfect MS70 by NGC, and only 39 have been signed by Anna Cabral, the 42nd Treasurer of the United States when this coin was issued! This rare, first year of issue Burnished Gold Eagle is made on specially prepared coin blanks, a special die is used to strike the coins that gives them a unique smooth matte finish. Burnished coins have lower mintages than mint state or proof strike Gold Eagles. These low mintages, along with other factors, can drastically impact the value.
The Cabral signature is one of the best known and most sought after in signature series coins. Compare these thirty-nine pieces with the 180 coins signed by Michael Castle that list for $5,000!
